Portable has now closed

Bigcommerce, a leader in the world of e-commerce platforms, has announced its acquisition of over 60 fashion retailers from Portable Shops, Portable’s apparel-focused online platform for elite fashion labels.

The transition will allow Portable Shops’ online retailers to maintain their beautifully designed and fashion conscious online stores whilst having access to the broader service and support system that Bigcommerce, offers. It’s an exciting moment for us, watching on as our Portable Shops clients are set to reach even greater heights with the power and scope of award-winning Bigcommerce, who will now manage all aspects of their online retail business.

“We worked hard over the past three years to build a place where fashion brands can feel like the Internet understands their needs,” says our co-founder Andrew Apostola. Bigcommerce, is very much on the way to becoming the place for fashion commerce online and we’re excited to be part of that evolution. This partnership with Bigcommerce, allows our most successful stores the option of scaling their operations to a new level.”

Bigcommerce, whose clients include mega-retailer Gibson Guitars among the 40,000 or so other retailers on their books, was founded in 2009 by two Aussies with a bold idea to create a scalable e-commerce platform for virtually every small to medium business in the world. Their client base is growing fast, with an increase of 38% in 2013. In addition, Bigcommerce, already housing some of the leading names in Australian retail, such as Dinosaur Designs and Bailey Nelson.

“We’re thrilled to be able to help more fashion retailers, like those coming to our platform from Portable Shops,” said Bigcommerce’s Chief Revenue Officer, Steven Power. Bigcommerce will help these labels sell more online by giving them the tools to rapidly grow, market their brand effectively, and get on with that they do best – designing and making great fashion. We are huge supporters of the home-grown fashion talent in Australia and we’re looking forward to helping them on their journey.”

The premise for Portable Shops is to blend the successful e-commerce strategies that our founders Simon and Andrew explored in their first book Taking Back Retail with the kind of fashion conscious design that builds an intimate relationship between retailer and consumer. It is with a mixture of pride and nostalgia that we wish these retailers the very best future with Bigcommerce.
